Panel Abstract:
Ethiopia’s architectural heritage, with a history spanning over millennia, serves as a vital record of its cultural, historical, and socio-political development. From monumental structures such as the Yeha Temple and the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela to diverse vernacular architectural forms, these sites are emblematic of the identities of their respective communities and hold global significance. However, this irreplaceable heritage is increasingly threatened by multiple, complex factors, including environmental degradation, rapid urbanization, insufficient documentation, and the scarcity of conservation resources. These challenges are further exacerbated by the absence of comprehensive policy frameworks and institutional support, which endanger the structural and cultural integrity of these sites.

This panel seeks to critically address the key issues affecting the preservation of Ethiopia’s architectural heritage. It will examine the pressing need for systematic and comprehensive documentation methodologies, the role of emerging technologies in conservation practices, and the potential of adaptive reuse projects that carefully balance the requirements of preservation with the demands of contemporary urban life. Additionally, the panel will explore innovative educational initiatives and outreach strategies designed to engage and empower the next generation of heritage professionals and local communities in the stewardship of Ethiopia’s architectural legacy.

By fostering dialogue around these themes, the panel aims to contribute to the development of more effective, sustainable preservation practices and policies that ensure the safeguarding of Ethiopia’s architectural heritage for future generations.
